DISTRICT PLANNING: A SHIFT TOWARD MORE THOUGHTFUL GROWTH?
On August 11, Edmonton's Urban Planning Committee discussed potential changes to how Secondary Corridors are identified and planned within Edmonton's District Plans.
Secondary Corridors were intended to be areas where additional density and development could be strategically directed - generally along important streets, near transportation and amenities, while transitioning into surrounding neighbourhoods.
The City is now taking a closer look at portions of the Secondary Corridor network and considering where more detailed, location-specific planning may be appropriate.
We have consistently advocated for thoughtful density in thoughtful locations… growth that considers infrastructure, transportation, neighbourhood context, schools, amenities and the people already living there.
Rather than treating every residential lot the same, Edmonton has an opportunity to be much more strategic about where and how we grow.
We will continue following this work closely and keeping neighbourhoods informed as it moves forward.
RESTRICTIVE COVENANTS
Over the past several months, interest in Restrictive Covenants (RCs) has grown significantly across Edmonton.
Residents in a number of neighbourhoods are now exploring (and in some cases actively pursuing) restrictive covenants as one tool available to property owners who want greater certainty about future redevelopment on their blocks.
ENU has now hosted and supported information sessions to help residents understand:
What is a Restrictive Covenant?
What can it do?
What can't it do?
What does activation involve?
Is it the right choice for my block or neighbourhood?
Does this affect the value of my home?
Restrictive Covenants aren't the answer for every neighbourhood or every homeowner. But residents deserve accurate information about the options legally available to them.
