It is becoming an all too common occurrence for congregants of Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. John the Baptist to hear the wailing of air raid sirens from thousands of kilometres away in Ukraine. Many congregants who are immigrants from Ukraine have an air raid siren app on their phones that goes off when bombs are being dropped on Ukrainian targets. After hearing the sirens, they can then call to check if their loved ones in Ukraine are OK.
Tomorrow, February 24th marks three years since Russia invaded Ukraine. The war with Russia has resulted in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of thousands, inflicted untold damage upon parts of the country and resulted in hundreds of thousands leaving their homeland, many of which are now in Edmonton.
USA President Trump and his team are attempting to negotiate an end to the war, and hopefully the negotiations will be successful.
The continuing war in Ukraine has caused millions to flee their homes in Ukraine, in most cases for places unknown in Europe. There is the odd exception and one of those, a LOT Polish Airline will be arriving in Edmonton on Monday. The plane was coming to Edmonton to pick up medical and emergency supplies for Ukraine via Poland and rather than flying here empty arrangements were made to bring a plane full of Ukrainians who already have family or friends willing to host them.
