The Edmonton Zoo has been home for Lucy, the Asian elephant since 1977. She is about to turn 50 and is in good health according to the latest checkup conducted by veterinarian Dennis Schmidt and husbandry expert Daryl Hoffman. Animal rights activists have raised concerns about Lucy's home (space) at the zoo and the zoo has responded with recommended changes. Activists also think that Lucy should be moved to a preserve but those most familiar with Lucy and Asian elephants don't think that would be best for her.

The public opinion about zoos has changed considerably since Lucy came to Edmonton zoo 47 years ago and zoo officials say Lucy will be the last elephant at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. The average life expectancy for an Asian elephant in human care is 46.8 years and German vets think that, barring a heart attack, she could live another 10 to 15 years.

In the 45 years since Lucy the elephant was brought to Edmonton the general attitude towards zoos has changed immensly. Being that Edmonton is about as far away as you can get from the natural habitat of elephants its not surprising that Lucy would be lacking the environment to keep her in the best health possible. It is for that reason that a wading pool for Lucy is being planned.
