The name, Windsor Heights Apartment, draws attention to the problem many residents of Windsor Park are having with a new apartment complex proposed Westrich Pacific. The proposed 27 storey tower is the latest example of a rezoning/infill building that has raised the ire of residents of many Edmonton neighbourhoods.
Michael Janz is one city councillor who questions why the city is considering committing funds for the private venture "Events Park" next to Roger's Place. Plans were announced in March for a complex deal involving the Province, Oilers Entertainment Group and the City. A public hearing at city hall is scheduled for June 26 ,but councillor Janz plans to introduce a motion to make this a referendum question on the ballots in October's election.
It's costly to build and then maintain Edmonton's network of roads. A newly released report to be presented on Wednesday states that approximately 1/3 of non-commercial drivers using Edmonton's roads are non-residents who pay no municipal taxes so they are in fact getting a free ride. The options to solve this are few and Councillor Michael Janz thinks these are long-term problems that will not be fixed overnight.
Stay tuned because this issue is literally where the rubber meets the road,
The majority of about 400 Edmonton residents that were recently polled expressed their desire for a new mayor and city council after the next election. The poll, done in late August and early September, revealed 60 per cent of Edmontonians think Sohi should be replaced, 26 per cent think Sohi and councillors deserve to be re-elected while 14 per cent didn’t know. As regards city councillors, 57 per cent of those polled said it is “time for a change”, 26 per cent felt their councillors should be re-elected and 17 per cent said they didn’t know.
One of the biggest concerns of those polled was the 8.9 percent property tax rate and with more difficult budget decisions coming this fall its almost guaranteed that the tax rate will be a major concern when Edmontonians have their say at the ballot boxes in October 2025.
Political writer Dave Cournoyer thinks Mayor Sohi and councillors need to do a better job of communicating the direction he wants to lead the city in,” Cournoyer told CityNews.
Governments at all levels should not use public (taxpayers) money to help fund private enterprise ventures.
